The east landfill in Swift Current will be getting a new scale house, after city council's approval.

Monday night city council selected the least expensive bid for the construction of unit, which was made by Jamal Contracting for just over $145,000.

General Manager of Infrastructure and Operations for the City of Swift Current Mitch Minken said the new scale house would replace the current one that's 25 years old.

"The new facility is designed to accommodate staff meetings, storage of files and supplies, and includes an office for the landfill superintendent to be present onsite," Minken told council.

The City had $300,000 earmarked for the new scale house project in their 2018 capital budget.

"The entire project will include not only the construction of the scale house, but the demolition and removal of the existing scale house and they've got an old scale that's left on site and there is also fencing to be completed and some earthworks to be done," he said. "So we expected that it will be under the $300,000, but don't know how much it will be under at this point."

Minken also noted the new facility should last as long as the landfill does and could act as a transfer station upon closure of the landfill.
