As the snow begins to melt and the pavement starts to thaw, unsafe and dangerous roads become more prevalent across the province.

CAA’s Worst Roads Campaign aims to highlight these treacherous road conditions, allowing motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists, runners, and transit riders to nominate what they believe is the worst road.

Christine Niemczyk, Director of Corporate Communications and Public Relations for CAA said there are numerous factors that can make a road unsafe.

“When you do go to the website and identify the road that you think is unsafe, it takes you to a drop-down menu and you can then indicate what are the issues that concern you about that road,” she explained. “Everything in there is included, such as potholes, crumbling pavement, poor infrastructure or no infrastructure, lack of signage, lack of unsafe intersections, or lack of infrastructure to allow sharing of the road with cyclists.”

One new addition to the campaign this year is the addition of Angel Blair, CAA’s Worst Roads Roving Reporter.

Blair will be conducting various interviews with road users and stakeholders to discuss possible solutions.

The interviews will be posted weekly on CAA’s social media channels and YouTube channel.

Niemczyk added that the site is user-friendly and includes a map for easy identification of roadways.

“When you do go to the site, there is a Google map, and you can specifically identify the road that is of concern to you,” she elaborated. “When you go to the drop-down menu, you can the name of the road, you can indicate what the closest intersection is, and all of that is very easy to nominate and vote. I would say it takes less than two minutes to do.

The results of the campaign are then shared with decision-makers at the provincial government as well as the municipality level.

“The purpose is to highlight the roads that are unsafe, that are the worst roads for road users in Saskatchewan and bring this to the attention of those responsible for fixing and maintaining those roads and then seeing what can be done to make those roads safe and to keep them off the worst roads top ten list,” she concluded.

Road users can vote every 24 hours until April 25 at caask.ca/worstroads.

The 2022 CAA Top Ten Worst Roads will be revealed on April 26.
