The Max Kirkpatrick rink leaves the ice after the opening ceremonies Wednesday

Day one of the SaskTel Tankard in Shaunavon saw the only local rink get off to a slow start.

Max Kirkpatrick and his team from the Swift Current Curling Club lost 8-4 to Bruce Korte, and are now in the B-event of the triple-knockout tournament. They're back on the ice at the Crescent point Wickenheiser Centre this afternoon where they'll face Kevin Marsh, who lost his opening match 6-3 to Scott Manners.

Other results from the opening draw had defending champion Brock Virtue beating Mike Armstrong 7-1, and Jeff Hartung defeating Josh Heidt 10-2.

In the evening draw, Scott Bitz beat Terry Marteniuk 5-4, Joel Jordison doubled up Randy Bryden 4-2, Steve Laycock edged Darren Camm 4-3, and Darrell McKee needed 12 ends to beat Brent Gedak 8-6.

The first of three draws today starts at 8:30am with McKee facing Laycock, Manners taking on Korte, Bitz battling Jordison and Virtue playing against Hartung.
