Over the weekend, Swift Current saw the highly anticipated return of the Kub Kar and Scout Truck Rally put on by Scouts Canada.

The event took place on Saturday, in the Swift Current Mall and provided the opportunity for children involved in Scouts, Cubs, and Beavers to show off their handmade Kars and Trucks.

The rally is centered around the local groups and allows them to race a vehicle that they have spent the last several weeks building.

Committee Chair and Fundraising coordinator for the Swift Current Scouts, Bobbi Dawn Legere (Akela), said that it’s refreshing to return to a full-scale event after several years off due to the pandemic.

“This is amazing,” she said. “I can't believe the turnout, and the parents stuck around, this is fantastic. Way better than expected, so many volunteers.”

The event had been a staple in Swift Current for over 30 years before being derailed by COVID-19.

“We did a small one in the park when COVID first happened, where we couldn't go out inside the building,” she stated. “So, we did a small one, just put the mats in the park.”

Legere explained that the event is partially for raising funds for local troops, as well as encouraging creativity and independence during the building process.

She added that Professional Upholstery and Carpet Cleaning played a large role in helping the children build their cars in preparation for the event.

“They have a woodshop in the back, and they help us with building the Kars,” she said. “And they teach the kids how the saws work, and so we do all of it there.”

Individuals were also able to purchase popcorn, pop and 50/50 tickets at Saturday's event.
