smart meter

Leaking units have been found to be the cause of the faulty smart meters that caused such a headache for SaskPower and home owners this summer in Saskatchewan.

The Crown Investment Corporation has released findings of their investigation into the matter that included 8 fires caused by the faulty units. The reports explains that the units in the fires were completely destroyed but they were able to examine other smart meters that had failed and they all had leaks, allowing rain water to seep inside, causing malfunctions.

The report also states that "customer safety was not given a high enough priority by SaskPower" until after two months of complaints from customers. At that time, the government actually stepped in and ordered the program to be stopped.

The report shows that there were previous reports of units from the supplier catching fire in both Alabama in 2010 and Philadelphia in 2012.

CIC Minister Don McMorris says they will ensure that all the smart meters are removed by the March 15th.

Following the critical reports on how SaskPower handled the smart meter program, SaskPower CEO and President Robert Watson resigned from his job. Watson was apologetic during the fiasco this summer, saying SaskPower was assured the meters were up to safety standards.
