Swit Current's Royal Canadian Legion is asking for the public and business community to step up and help them save the Legion Hall.

They've started a campaign to raise $500,000 for much needed renovations to the building.

Interview with Vel Burns"Work on the rear portion of our roof," said President Vel Burns. "It's a tar and gravel roof and it's starting to fall apart. The floor needs some work done as well."

"Just general attention otherwise... ceiling tiles that need replacing (and) a furnace that needs to be looked at."

They're starting with a basic fund raising campaign hoping they can get the public's support that way.

"We've sent out letters to all the different businesses and we're hoping the public and our members would come on board," Burns said.

She is worried about what would happen to the legacy of their work and the memory of our veterans if the building isn't fixed.

"If the Legion building isn't there anymore my concern is that slowly that will die out and people will forget why the veterans fought so hard," Burns said. "We have new veterans coming up too that need support. The Legion is going to continue to support the new veterans that have come home in the last couple of years."

Burns has considered organizing some fund raising events though she noted volunteers are hard to come by.

Their goal is to have the funding in place by January.
