It was a changing of the guard last night in Alberta's provincial election as the United Conservative Party picked up a majority win.

The party led by Jason Kenney won 63 of 87 seats and will be joining Saskatchewan in the fight against a federally imposed carbon tax.

Swift Current MLA Everett Hindley said it will be nice to have another ally against the carbon tax.

"Even less than a year ago there was only one province and that was us, Saskatchewan standing up against the Trudeau carbon tax," he said. "As of last night, Alberta now makes 5 province's and that represents about 60 per cent of Canada's population that has said no to the carbon tax."

Hindley also believes because the two party's share similar values that trade between Saskatchewan and Alberta might pick up as well.

"There is so much that aligns our province's in terms of economic policies," he said. "Both provinces rely pretty heavily on the oil and gas sector and that's even more so in Alberta than it is here in Saskatchewan. A lot of it is aligned for us that way and that's why I think we think alike on a lot of these economic policies. When it comes to trade I think there is an opportunity for more cooperation between our two provinces."

The NDP had held power in Alberta since 2015, after the province was governed by a conservative government for 44 years prior.
