Recently a Grade 11 student from the Swift Current Comprehensive High School was given an opportunity to participate in a junior model European Union parliament session.

David Camarador was in Austria last week for the experience, and he wants to bring attention to something similar back that used to be held in his home province.

Students from all countries in the European Union are invited to take part in this opportunity. While Canadian students weren’t initially invited, Camarador reached out to the board of the model parliament and asked if it was possible for one to attend.

The response he received was a resounding yes.

The board asked for a delegation of five students to be sent, but only Camarador could make it.

Camarador noticed political topics varied greatly from the European Union and in North America. He said it was very interesting to look at politics with a more worldly view rather than just looking at politics locally.

The lone Canadian representative, Camarador was grouped with students from elsewhere. They were tasked with, and were successful at, convincing the model European Union to pass an act that would achieve full nuclear disarmament in the European Union.

Camarador - who has played the role of premier in a similar exercise provincially when it was held - said it’d be neat to have more involvement from Saskatchewan youth.

“We wanted to establish a similar structure called Model Legislature that took place in Regina where delegates from Saskatoon, Shaunavon, and Swift Current went to the legislative building and debated similarly to the model European Union.”

Camarador added that this is an important opportunity for Saskatchewan students to have as it gives them a inside look into what the legislature does, and also gets youth interested in a career in politics.
