January 27th is Family Literacy Day in Canada, and all across the country hundreds of organizations, libraries and schools are taking part by having reading sessions and related events.

Every year, the Southwest Literacy Committee teams up with the Chinook School Division to bring up the importance of literacy through events around Swift Current.

This morning, local students were at the Swift Current Mall where storytime was held and a therapy dog was also present. Grade 3 student Aidan shared his reaction.

"I liked it cause I liked listening to the book and I like dogs."

Aidan's mom Christie Robinson is the curiculum coordinator with the Chinook School Division and a member of the Southwest Literacy Committee. She speaks on the importance of reading.

"It's an everyday activity. He loves to be able to read, even if it's a late night he always wants to make sure he has some time in to read and I think that's the biggest thing. Making sure to carve out those 15 minutes in your day to talk with one another and do some reading."
