The City of Swift Current could be without the majority of its taxis in a months time.

Upon completing a mandated, province-wide inspection, Swift Current could lose nine of its 14 taxies.

"The City of Swift Current has 14 licenced taxi cabs, all of which were inspected," Jackie Schlamp Bylaw Compliance & Licensing Official with the City of Swift Current said. "Five of those taxi's passed the inspection, meaning they met all of the required standards to safely transport passengers, they can be identified as they have a blue sticker in the back window. All of the remaining cabs have 30 days to remedy any of the noted deficiencies and will be re-inspected at that time."

The inspections were performed on Tuesday by two representatives from SGI Vehicle Standards, an RCMP member from the City's detachment along with the City's Bylaw Compliance & Licensing Official.

"I'm pleased that all taxi companies participated, and I look forward to the deficient vehicles being repaired in a short period of time to ensure the appropriate number of taxi cabs are available to the public," Schlamp said Wednesday afternoon. "Collectively, we're all working together to provide a safe, reliable service and to ensure compliance within the provincial regulations as well as the City's taxi bylaw."

If the noted deficiencies from the inspection aren't remedied and the re-inspection doesn't take place within the 30 days period, SGI will automatically revoke their taxi licence as well as the licence plate on the vehicle. If this occurs, it would only affect the car that didn't pass the re-inspection, there would be no consequence for the taxi company itself.
