Getting the help you need to quit smoking is a lot easier and more available than you may think.

January 20th to 26th is National Non-Smoking Week, and pharmacists in Swift Current want to show that you do have options when it comes to quitting.

One of those is the PACT program, or Partnership to Assist with Cessation of Tobacco.

"It's a government-funded program, where patients can have either group counselling or one-on-one counselling with a pharmacist who has been trained specifically to help patients to stop," said Crystal Raymond, a pharmacist at Pharmasave in Swift Current who has been trained in the PACT program, who adds it all starts with trying to understand the degree of the individual's smoking addiction.

"We try to establish where they are in their own quitting process, because most people will try to quit multiple times," she added. "In fact, the average person tries to quit six times before they're successful."

Raymond adds if you're interested in getting help through the PACT program, you can get in touch with the pharmacists at Pharmasave, and if there is enough people, they will run a group session which would run for an hour a week.

The Pioneer Co-op Pharmacy and Cypress Health Region Community Health Services also participate in the PACT program in Swift Current, and you can also get more details online at makeapact.ca.
