A big boost for Maple Creek and District Opportunities was announced yesterday morning by the Saskatchewan Government.

The announcement was delivered by Cypress Hills MLA Douglas Steele, and will see $80,000 in new capital funding given to Maple Creek and District Opportunities.

"It's going to assist in a lot of great work that's happening already in Maple Creek, especially with the Maple Creek and District Opportunities Centre," Steele said. "They do some amazing work for the disabled people in the area, so this funding is going to create some improvements for their building and facility overall."

The allotted funding from the provincial government will allow for the modernization of the facilities. That means updating the program and kitchen areas, designing accessible washrooms, replacing flooring and lighting, and landscaping work at the day program location.

"You have some individuals living fairly close to the facility itself," Steele noted. "They will go across (to the facility) each day and participate in different types of projects and it also gives them the training to go out and work with in the community."

Steele also said the day as a whole went very well and that the Maple Creek and District Opportunities was very appreciative of the new funding.

Maple Creek and District Opportunities has existed since 1975 and currently operates one group home and one day program supporting 15 people experiencing intellectual disabilities.
