Swift Current's Elmwood Golf Club will host the Friends of Millar Golf Tournament Saturday

One of Canada's most decorated Olympians will be in Swift Current for the 2014 Friends of Millar Golf Tournament Saturday at Elmwood Golf Club.

Speed skater Cindy Klassen will be meeting with the golfers to talk about how her faith has played a role in sport and life.

"Basically, the most important thing in my life is my faith in Christ, and just how that faith has helped through the good times, but most importantly through the bad times," she said. "My sister had a terrible accident, and my faith and our family's faith really helped carry us through those times of adversity."

The Winnipeg native won six Olympic medals on the oval, including five at Torino in 2006 to become the only Canadian Olympian to win five medals at a single Olympics. She says the single-biggest honour in her career was carrying Canada's flag at the closing ceremonies of those games.

"To be able to walk into that stadium, and because we were the next country to host the Olympics four years down the road, I was able to stand at the front of the podium and I saw all of my teammates walk in," she said. "I was able to smile and wave, and it was such an amazing opportunity and a huge honour for me."

The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 12:00 noon with registration at 10:30am at a cost of $150 per golfer. You can also register in advance by calling Millar College of the Bible at 306-582-2033.
