At next Monday's Swift Current city council meeting, a verdict is expected on whether The Center is successful in their argument to have a proposed bylaw changed to prohibit marijuana dispenseries from being close to the youth centre.

Nathan Wiebe - executive director of The Center - talked before about how it wouldn't look good having a pot shop right beside them. Yesterday he spoke more on the issue, and said on top of image, it's crucial for them to try to keep fighting the bylaw for the safety of the youth.

"To see a cannabis shop across the street, or beside, it doesn't look good on anybody's account - our account, the City's account, nobody. I think taking that into consideration, it's for sure a part of it. I think moving forward our direct and most-important concern is the safety of the youth and the trust of the parents that trust us with these kids everyday. And that's what it comes down to - we want The Center to be a safe place; we don't want marijuana or any type of drugs around The Center. Our staff work really hard at keeping not only the inside of the building safe, but keeping the outside of the building [safe]."

Wiebe added that when marijuana is legal, it won't change how things operate at The Center, since they already have safeguards for keeping it out of their area.

But he did say they plan on keeping their battle going to try to keep a dispensery from being somewhere within a buffer (of 100 to 300 metres).

"Essentially what we're trying to do here is, one - promote that The Center is doing its absolute best to keep this out of our building, and away from our block. Kids are going to push the limits a little bit, but we're trying to set up policies and procedures to make sure that we're ready for whatever comes our way. Nothing's really going to change. We operate that way to begin with. But this is just going to be something we're going to have to keep a close watch on and a close eye on. We're just going to continue to talk about it and make sure the youth and parents know that we're not going to just drop this easily."
