Two representatives from the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan made a declaration Monday night in front of City Council.

Icasiana de Gala and Bula Ghosh declared the week of November 20th to 26th as 'Multicultural Week' in Swift Current.

Icasiana, the Executive Director of the Southwest Newcomer Welcome Centre, explains how quickly multiculturalism is spreading in the city.

"In Swift Current alone, we have over 60 cultures(countries) here. Recent additions are Syria, Eritrea, Morocco, Montenegro, and Argentina - these are all just from the last year," she said.

The Executive Director further shares the multicultural spirit and atmosphere that has enveloped Swift Current.

"Everyone who walks around the city would say this is a changing community with so many cultures.

You go outside and can smell Indian food and Filipino food, and you have two Asian stores here.

This is a testament to the changing culture within Swift Current," she said.

Monday, November 21: Proclamation of Multicultural Week at Swift Current City Hall, 6:30 pm
Tuesday, November 22: Evening Social at the SW Newcomer Welcome Centre, 237 Central Ave. North, 6-8 pm
Wednesday, November 23: SW Newcomer Welcome Centre Open House, 1-5 pm
Thursday, November 24: 'Understanding Diversity' workshop by the Multicultural Council of SK (MCOS) at the Lyric Theatre, 1-4 pm. Come and warm up during the Christmas Tree Lighting, 6- 8 pm
Friday, November 25: Potluck at 6 pm and movie at 7 pm: The African Doctor

The 'Understanding Diversity' workshop on Thursday will require registration and a $10 fee, which Icasiana explains is due to a lack of outside funding from larger organizations.
