More than 11,000 people are eligible to vote for the next leader of the Saskatchewan New Democrats, a 35% increase in their membership over last year.

"What we've got is a very competitive leadership race, and we've got four very strong candidates," said the NDP's Provincial Secretary Craig Ashbourne. "As a result, I think there is a great deal of excitement on the part of supporters for all four candidates, so that's great to see."

He adds the growth is spread out across all areas of the province, not just in urban areas, but rural areas like southwest Saskatchewan.

"That's not just an urban growth, but also in some of the smaller towns and smaller communities around the province," Ashbourne said. "We've got new members we were putting into the lists over the weekend of members who are farmers, members who live in small towns and small town business owners. It's just great to see that there is a diversity of people joining."

Ashbourne notes that there is also new youth members in Swift Current and throughout the southwest, with the party reporting that membership in the Young New Democrats has increased by more than 350% provincewide.

Party members will vote for the next leader of the NDP on March 9th in Saskatoon.
