LORI AND POTTER

Called a living heritage, and a legacy our children's children can enjoy, protecting endangered species and spaces is paramount to the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

The organization has partnered with the Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Centre here in Moose Jaw.

"We are acquiring some land that is specifically designed as habitats for the owls. We are protecting some of the areas and conserving in a general sense for many species not just burrowing owls but for the benefit for many species that need that habitat to survive." Said Spokesperson Sharon Rodenbush.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada has purchased property near Lang, SK that has two owl nests, but burrowing owl populations are continuing to drop.

Owl numbers are down 40% last year, with only 35 pairs remaining in the province. It's suspected that recent cool, wet springs have hampered the owls' feeding and nesting.
