Gull Lake has been anticipating a new Sarcan building for a long time, and the work is now nearing completion.

The existing depot has been operating since 1989, and has an area of 1,000 sq.ft., while the new depot will be 2,500 sq.ft. Construction of the new building has been underway since July, and it is expected to be complete by the end of October. The facility will feature more chutes to unload containers, a drop-and-go service, as well as better access to a truck loading bay.

Sarcan's Director of Operations, Kevin Acton has been overseeing the progress in Gull Lake.

"We service about 3,500 customers a year at the Gull Lake Depot," stated Acton. " For the last few years, we've taken over a million beverage containers per year there."

The new facility is currently being built just across the street from the existing one, on the spot where Gull Lake's historic Clarendon Hotel burned down in late 2016. The depot is the closest to Gull Lake's surrounding areas and the towns of Webb, Tompkins, and Hazlet.

"It's not a huge community but we've got people coming in from outside of Gull Lake," said Acton. "They're stopping by the depot, getting their recycling done, diverting it from the landfill, taking the money and using it in town. We're a good part of the community that way."
