Soon, smokers will no longer be able to light up in their vehicle if someone under the age of 16 is present.

Nicole Nieminen, Senior Policy Analyst with the Provincial Ministry of Health, says the legislation passed in the spring should become law later this fall. A broad public awareness campaign is being planned on the new legislation.

There's no official timeline for this to become law in Saskatchewan, but it's expected within a few months. A fine will be issued to those who don't comply, but the amount still needs to be determined.

Similar legislation is already in effect in Manitoba, where the fine for breaking the law is $199.
