Population growth is a focus for the City of Swift Current, and at last night's council meeting a proposal was approved that could facilitate more people living in town.

Once it's construction season again, the City can finish the next phase of lots in the Valley Ridge residential area.

This phase will see the city set the infrastructure for 26 dwelling units - including 12 single-detached dwellings, and seven side-by-side units (equalling the other 14 dwellings).

Michael Ruus, Swift Current's general manager of planning and development, delivered the proposal, which was voted for unanimously by council (excluding Pat Friesen, who wasn't present).

Mayor Denis Perrault wants to bring the Swift Current's population from around 18,500 to 25,000 by the year 2025.

"It's more lots and more growth in our community, so very positive," he said.

Developers or individuals will then be able to purchase the lots off the City in order to build the units.
