The Pony Express officially ceases operations.
The Pony Express was a fast mail service crossing the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains.
Now the most dangerous job is Alaskan Crab Fishing ... back then, Pony Express.
There is a famous advertisement that reportedly read, "Wanted: Young, skinny, wiry fellows not over eighteen. Must be expert riders, willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred."

The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral takes place at Tombstone, Arizona.
Wyatt Earp, Morgan Earp, Virgil Earp, and Doc Holliday fought Frank McLaury, Tom McLaury, Billy Claiborne, Ike Clanton, and Billy Clanton.

The last natural case of smallpox is discovered in Merca district, Somalia. The WHO and the CDC consider this date the anniversary of the eradication of smallpox, the most spectacular success of vaccination.

National news headlines this morning: Paul the Octopus became internationally famous for correctly predicting the winner of Germany's seven matches at the FIFA 2010 World Cup, as well as the final. He died on 26 October 2010.
As a reward for his accurate predictions, aquarium staff presented him with his very own replica World Cup trophy garnished with his favorite food – mussels
