Gritty Game 2 Win Forces Game 3 for Midget AA Broncos in Prov Final

Written by Eric James

Needing to scrap and claw for a win to keep their season alive, the Abbey Resources Midget AA Broncos did just that on the road Saturday evening.

Down 1-0 to the Battlefords Barons in their best-of-three Provincial Final series, the Midget AA Broncos earned a 3-1 win to force a third-and-final game.

For the second-straight game, the Barons opened scoring, as captain Jaryd Nachtegaele capitalized on a bad bound to bury Battlefords' lone goal in the game under six minutes into the first period.

Riley Skarbon answered three-and-a-half minutes later for Swift Current, catching a pass trailing in the high slot and wristing it past the Barons' keeper.

That 1-1 score lasted through the remainder of the first period and all of the second frame, setting the stage for a tense final 20 minutes for the Midget AA Broncos.

In a do-or-die game, Swift Current opted for the former in the third period.

Rookie defenseman Levi Brewer scored the eventual game-winner on a heavily-screened point shot on the powerplay, as the Midget Broncos took the 2-1 lead with 18:17 left in the third.

"Well we’re on the powerplay, and we’re told to get shots on the net, so I just threw it at the net," Brewer said. "I saw a bunch of guys there, saw there was a screen, and took the shot. I didn’t even see if it was in or not. Looked around, I heard the ping of the post, and yeah I was pretty excited."

As was the case over the first 40 minutes, Battlefords used a heavy dose of physicality in the third period to try and will their way back into the game and regain momentum.

Unlike Game 1 though, the Midget AA Broncos were able to handle the hard-checking Barons much better.

“I think we countered it well," said Brewer post-game. "In Game 1 I think we didn’t know what we were going to get out of them. We realized they play a physical game, so we knew the hits were coming, made the plays and kept er going, so I think that we just adjusted by playing our game."

It stayed a narrow 2-1 lead for nearly the rest of the final frame, until with the Barons' net empty, rookie forward Cash Arntsen slide the puck past the goal-line for the insurance marker.

The steady offensive effort in the win was also balanced nicely by a goaltending performance as fine as they come.

Brad Nyen stopped 42 of 43 shots for Swift Current - the bulk of those coming in close range, high-quality scoring opportunities.

"Brad played awesome today, he was a huge part of why we won the game," noted Brewer. "He stopped 40-some shots – he was on fire today, and we couldn’t have done it without him."

We have a fun season finale on our hands this Wednesday. With a Provincial title up for grabs for both teams, Swift Current hosts Game 3.

“We’re all excited now. After Game 1... the loss... it really motivated us," admitted Brewer. "We knew that at any point in time in this series, we’re not out. We’re a team that’s worked hard all year to get here, and that’s our mindset right now – just work hard and we can beat anybody.”

Swift Current and Battlefords face off Wednesday night at 7:45 p.m. from the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.
