Operation Christmas Child was overwhelmed with support in Swift Current this year, receiving over 3800 shoeboxes to be distributed to children in need this holiday season.

"This is a new record," said Benita Letnes, Local Area Co-ordinator for Operation Christmas Child, a program of Samaritan's Purse. "We have collected 3803 shoeboxes, and we have never collected 3000 before."

Letnes says all of those shoeboxes were trucked to Calgary on Tuesday, and they will now be inspected and sorted by 12,000 volunteers before they are shipped out.

The shoeboxes contain a variety of gifts for children in developing countries around the world, including specially marked boxes which will be distributed in Ukraine this year.
