The Cypress Health Region has declared outbreak status for the Western Senior Citizens Home in Leader.

The home has seen 4 staff and 5 residents display norovirus like symptoms as of Monday.

Director of Rural Health Trent Regier is asking that you call ahead before heading to the home to visit loved ones.

Interview with Trent Regier"We are restricting visitors," Regier said. "We need to be able to control the environment and so we are working diligently with our public health team in putting together our protocols and trying to resolve this illness as quickly as we can."

The health region sent samples to the Saskatchewan Disease Control Laboratory in Regina and expect results as early as Tuesday. It will take a while longer before the home is open to visitation.

"Generally we would have to go 72 hours without people having signs or symptoms," Regier said. "Best guess at this point would be somewhere at the end of the week where we would have the situation managed."

Regier stressed that especially around this time of year people should be practicing proper hand washing techniques to help curb potential infection.
