An outbreak status has been declared at the Foyer St. Joseph's facility in Ponteix due to the presence of respiratory illness signs and symptoms amongst the facility's long term care residents.

"We have about 6 individuals who are ill currently with very similar symptoms, respiratory symptoms essentially. We've done the lab work and we are hoping to get results either later today or tomorrow, to know what exactly is causing this outbreak, but we are taking the appropriate precautions to enhance the Infection Control measures, and we are limiting activities and visitation until we get this under control", said Dr. David Torr, Consulting Medical Health Officer for the Cypress Health Region.

Dr. Torr also added, one of the key things to remember in these situations is that many people in long term care may have weaker immune systems,

"What we may take as a simple cold could actually become a sever infection in a senior. I always advise the public, when visiting, if you have even the slightest of a sniffle, think twice about visiting and if you do, at least take precautions while visiting".

Until further notice, visitation to the long term care side of the facility will be restricted.  The only exceptions to these restrictions will be in the event of an ‘end of life’ situation, where the nurse in charge at the facility can be contacted to discuss the options that are available for the family members to visit their loved one.

Public Health and Infection Control Team members are actively involved in the situation and are providing guidance into the ongoing steps being taken to eradicate the illness.

Foyer St. Joseph’s and the health region are strongly emphasizing that everyone do what they can to prevent the spread of illness and sickness to others. Frequent and proper hand washing, staying home when ill, and enhanced cleaning of hard surfaces within your homes or businesses should always be the normal practice.
