One of the longest-running rodeos in western Canada galloped on over the weekend in a remote part of southwestern Saskatchewan.

The Murraydale Stampede & Picnic rode into its 115th year continuing an annual tradition. The event not only made it through the COVID-19 pandemic, it was held multiple times during it too.

Emmy Robertson has been attending the long-standing event since she was a kid. Now she's a member of the Murraydale Stampede & Picnic committee.

"It's a fairly special thing," she said regarding the rodeo's longevity. "We work really hard to make sure this rodeo can keep going. It's a place where kids can get started."

What makes the 115-year feat even more impressive is that there's nobody that actually lives in Murraydale. It's just the rodeo grounds.

"Even though there's not an actual community, lots of these little areas, they really are a community," she said. "The neighbours have been getting together forever and even though there is not a specific building to show the community. It really is a community."

The rodeo committee even revamped the arena recently to make sure it can continue on.

"It used to be wooden corrals and a page wire fence around," she said was the olden day's setup.

Twelve events headlined this year's tradition with some unique events such as the tiny mite barrel race, calf race, wild steer race, and cow riding.

Daina Dixon won the open barrel race, Bailey Winquist won the junior barrel race, and Addie Bandy won the tiny mite barrel race.

Kahl Wasilow was the lone bull rider to make it the eight seconds to win the category. Swift Current Online's Alex Kozroski competed in this event.

Zack Moorhead won the steer riding while Colt Belisle won the cow riding.
