The rain has finally come for Swift Current and area.

With some smattering of it already this morning, tonight is forecasted for 10 millimetres of rainfall.

This relief comes as dry conditions have prevailed for weeks, offering hope for the local farmers.

Securing the forecast is Stephen Berg, meteorologist for Environment and Climate Change Canada.

"A cell just went over the top of you in the last few minutes," said Berg. That looks like it could continue for the rest of the day."

Some showers and a chance for thunderstorms will persist for today, but tonight is when the show really begins.

It may be widespread, or it could be more local. The showers are expected to stop and start over the region overnight, with a chance for a storm tomorrow.

"Precipitation is a very difficult thing to forecast, especially showers or thunderstorms," said Berg. "A thunderstorm could dump a lot of rain over a short period of time, skewing the rainfall numbers a little bit, but there's always a chance that there is some decent moisture coming in as well."

This summer is forecasted to be hot and dry by and large. These episodes of rainfall are going to be lifelines strung out over weeks ahead. There have even been talks about the province stepping in with plans to help with water supply in rural areas.
