The Swift Current Broncos were within less than a second of a shootout with the Regina Pats on Friday night.

Sam Steel stole a pass in his own zone and broke up ice on a 3 on 1 before setting Adam Brooks up for the overtime winner with only 0.7 seconds left as Regina beat Swift Current 4-3.

"It was an exciting game especially at the end," said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. "It looked like we were headed for a shootout and as you can see you have to play all the way to the end of the game."

"A really gutsy effort from our team. We lost some guys throughout the game. That's just the way it's been going with the man games and injuries. That's out of our control. I thought the guys in blue battled hard tonight and if we do that on a more consistent basis we'll get results."

Both forwards Brandan Arnold and Calvin Spencer left the game at different times cutting the Broncos down to ten forwards. They were already missing Glenn Gawdin whose status is uncertain after being injured on Wednesday in Saskatoon.

Swift Current had a 3-2 lead in the final minutes when Steel deflected in a Colby Williams shot to force overtime.

"Our guys just missed our assignments," Smith said. "That's what's going to happen in this league. A little tired and battled hard. There's no doubt our guys dug down deep to find a way in the third to give ourselves a chance to win and it's just disappointing to lose like that."

Jon Martin, Lane Pederson and Scott Feser had goals for Swift Current. Both Martin and Tyler Steenbergen had two point nights.

Swift Current had a 1-0 lead after the first period on Martin's league leading 27th goal of the season. Regina then pulled ahead in the second period as Brooks set up goals by Adam Berg and Austin Wagner.

Pederson pulled Swift Current into a 2-2 tie midway through the second period on the rebound of a Steenbergen shot. Feser gave Swift Current a late lead on a quick pass from Arthur Miller behind the Regina net leading to a quick release.

Landon Bow made 34 saves for the Broncos in a losing cause.

The Broncos now have points in each of their last three games. They're seven points behind Edmonton for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot after the Oil Kings beat Brandon.
