More than 350 communities in Saskatchewan received an early Christmas present from the Provincial Government thanks to the Community Rink Affordability Grant.

The second year of the grant program invested a total of $1.6 million into 520 rinks in 362 communities.

"The grant was the fufillment of a campaign promise that the Premier made in 2011 where we were going to provide $2500 per ice rink surface to all communities if they were eligible," said Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Kevin Doherty. "The idea was to provide this money for these communities to invest in their local hockey rink or curling rink to help them with minor repairs or maintenance, or hire someone to do cleaning and those kinds of things."

Doherty says the total allocation was down $85,000 from the total investment in the program's first year in 2012, but he says the program was popular again, and it could come back next year depending on what the budget allows.
