Last week police detachments wrapped up their province-wide gun amnesty.

Between both the Swift Current Municipal and Rural RCMP, 10 firearms, three start pistols, and a little bit of ammo were brought in.

"We seized four firearms, three starter pistols, and a little bit of ammo," shared office manager with the Swift Current Municipal RCMP Paige Aldag.

Aldag said that the amnesty gave Swift Current residents a chance to turn in the firearms without any worry.

"It's a chance for the public to contact and get rid of these firearms without any charges," she said. "It gives them a chance to get rid of those firearms in a safe way."

The Swift Current Rural RCMP in connection with the Kyle detachment received six firearms.

Corporal Shannon Brouwer with the Swift Current Rural RCMP, said that the amnesty went very well.

"Anytime that we can get firearms turned in and taken from people that don't have a use for them we are happy to do so," she said. "Anytime we get firearms off the streets and potentially away from people who aren't using them for their proper reasons that's a good thing."

Brouwer added that she hopes that the province-wide gun amnesty is something that will continue annually.

Both Brouwer and Aldag said that just because the gun amnesty is over, it doesn't mean people can't turn in unwanted firearms as both the Rural and Municipal RCMP will accept them.
