The Saskatchewan government is doing what they can to ensure everyone can enjoy the provinical parks including those with mobility issues.

It was recently announced that they will be investing over $18 million dollars in improvements to provincial parks and a good portion of the improvements are geared towards facilities to provide improved access for those with mobility challenges.

Byron Davis, Executive Director of the Infrastructure and Capital Planning Branch in the Parks Division of Parks, Culture and Sport, provides details on how the money will be spent.

"Over the past several years we've focused on some improvements to park facilities such as campground service centers that are fully accessible washroom and shower facilities. Campsites and picnic sites that are more mobility friendly with ramps and hard surfacing."

The government is committed to providing a good park experience to all visitors including those with physical challenges.

Davis details some renovations taking place within parks in the south west.

"We're developing a new campground in Cypress Hills, Pine Hill Campground. In that campground, there will be a new accessible service center with the addition of a family change room that allows for families or caregivers to use that with folks with mobility challenges. We've got a new playground planned for Cypress Hills as well with some accessible features."

In addition one of four group pavillions is being built at Buffalo Pound which will be made accessible and at Sask Landing Provincial Park a new campground service center is being built at the Bear Paw campground with accessible facilities.

All of these projects will begin this summer and intend to be operational by the next summer season.

Davis adds that there are also sections of trails that are hard sectioned and accessible along with swimming pools including one at Buffalo Pound that are zero entry and have a sloped entry for those with mobility issues.
