Another business has stepped forward with a significant financial gift for the Southwest Facility Foundation.

RBC Dominion Securities Inc. has pledged to donate $130,000 over five years to the non-profit organization.

Their commitment was spurred on by a prior donation according to Jerrod Schafer, a senior portfolio manager with RBC Dominion Securities Inc.

"We had a couple of folks from MNP come over after they made their donation and explained what their process was," he said. "From our perspective, it was pretty inspiring to see a local business make a commitment like that. Our advisors in the office chatted about it and we certainly felt an obligation that we wanted to help out and take part."

The foundation aims to raise $8 million to help Swift Current add a new sports, leisure, and recreational facility for the southwest to utilize. Schafer believes their local clientele's faith in their ability to determine the best course of action for investing and financial decision-making can be observed in this commitment.

"We know how important something like this is for the community and we want to invest back," he said. "We know a project and a facility like this is not only good for everybody that's living in Swift Current but folks in the southwest."

Schafer, a former two-term mayor of Swift Current, was happy to see a local committee formed to push this idea forward and said it historically it will play a critical role in securing additional funding.

"The committee has done a good job at highlighting where they've had success with rec projects around the province, there's always been grassroots or fundraising or community buy-in initiative that's come with that," he said. "I think the City has done a great job over the years investing in critical infrastructure like water treatment plants and wastewater treatment plants. Sometimes we haven't been successful in getting funding for the more fun stuff like recreational facilities."
