As winter sets in with fresh ice and snow on the roads, drivers are reminded to be cautious on city streets.

Staff Sergeant Ian Mitchell with RCMP Traffic Services says there tends to be more accidents after the first snowfall of the year.  He says a big part of this is that drivers aren't in a winter-driving frame of mind.

Drivers are reminded that stopping distances will likely increase with slippery conditions, so it's important to allow yourself more time to stop.

Mitchell adds that intersections with stop signs or traffic lights are particularly bad for accidents because as people stop on snow, it packs and gets polished into glare ice, making it hard to stop quickly.
