As we open our wallets to help the victims of last week's earthquake in Haiti, there are, unfortunately, some people looking to profit from the catastrophe.

The RCMP Commercial Crimes Unit is warning everyone to be wary of scams when donating to relief efforts, and to make sure the money is going to a legitimate charity.  You can find out if a charity is registered by logging on to the Canada Revenue Agency's Charities Listings website at cra.gc.ca/donors.

RCMP say, so far, there have been no reports of scams regarding the disaster in Haiti circulating the province.  However, they are asking those who may have been victimized by a charity scam to call their local police service or RCMP detachment.
