SaskPower and the Saskatchewan RCMP are warning the public of a new fraud scheme sweeping the province.

The scheme is called "Phishing" and refers to obtaining information from the cover of a trusted name in electronic communication.

In this case, the scammers pretended to be looking for billing information, posing to be SaskPower.

The scammers would allegedly inform victims that they had become eligible for a payment or refund from SaskPower, and then would ask for their personal banking information to deposit the money.

The Saskatchewan RCMP remind residents to never provide personal or financial information in response to an unsecured electronic communication.
