Swift Current's Walmart store will be getting quite the makeover, with a conversion now underway into the retailer's Supercentre format.

"Our Supercentres are our favourite format, and they really address a customer preference for one-stop shopping," said Felicia Fefer, Manager of Corporate Affairs for Walmart Canada. "We'll be adding all varieties of food, including fresh produce, meat, baked goods and prepared meals. You'll see a new colour scheme and wider aisles. The store will definitely be refreshed."

Fefer says they will be working within the current 113,000 square-foot area of the store, which opened at Swift Current Mall in 2006, moving from its former location in the Wheatland Mall.

The start of construction comes as Walmart announced another year of major expansion across the country, just as American retailer Target opens their first stores in Canada this year, with three stores planned for Saskatchewan.

"Walmart Canada is Canada's fastest growing retailer. It's about better serving our customers, and especially in markets where we're underserved," Fefer added. "We've always had robust expansion plans year after year. We also know that competition makes us stronger and we're always happy to be part of active retail hubs and better serving our customers."

There is no set date for the grand re-opening, but Fefer expects it to be around late spring. She adds with the new-look store comes more job opportunities, and if you are interested, you can stop by the store or get in touch with the local manager.
