In light of recent rat sightings in Medicine Hat, the City of Swift Current is providing an update on their rodent control progress.

Officials with the Alberta city have been working with staff from Cypress County and the province's Agriculture Ministry to keep rodent populations at bay after at least 78 rat carcasses were found in the Medicine Hat landfill over a 14-day period.

Swift Current had a widely-publicized rodent problem in the spring of 2009 when a large number of rat sightings were reported.

The City says a maintenance plan developed with Saskatchewan Pest Control Officers has been in place in the five years since, where weekly baiting and constant monitoring have been conducted at the East Landfill.

They add to date, there has been no evidence of rodents observed at the landfill, and they are confident the plan has been working and will continue to work in the future.
