Saskatchewan's provincial government says the 2018-2019 budget includes a bit of a boost to the province's oil and mining sectors.

The additional funds will allow the Ministry of Energy and Resources to provide financial support for services that fuel the province's energy sectors.

Energy and Resources Minister Bronwyn Eyre said the extra money will contribute to upgrading essential programming in the field. "This budget helps ensure that our energy and resource sectors continue to lead the way in Saskatchewan’s economic growth," she explained.

"With the additional funding announced today, our government is on track to fulfill our commitment to enhance our oil and gas regulatory programs."

The Ministry of Energy and Resources’ budget of $45.8 million includes an increase of $665,000, a 1.5 per cent jump from the previous budget.

Initiatives such as the Integrated Resource Information System (IRIS) for the Pipeline Regulation Enhancement Program (PREP) and the Mineral Development Strategy will benefit from the increase.

The former will have an additional $1 million out of the total $1.5 million budget. IRIS is a custom built online business system that aids in the development and regulation of Saskatchewan’s oil and gas industry such as strengthening Saskatchewan’s approach to pipeline regulation.

The new four-year deal for the Mineral Development Strategy will create an incentive program to encourage mineral exploration and to increase the amount of geophysical data available to the province.

"The new Mineral Development Strategy will encourage industry to conduct more exploration in Saskatchewan and will help protect important northern jobs in our current mining centres,” said Eyre.

Oil and gas is responsible for an estimated 15 per cent of Saskatchewan’s gross domestic product
