Saskatchewan has hit a new all-time high for wholesale trade.

According to numbers issued yesterday by Statistics Canada, wholesale trade in December increased by 25.6% compared to $1.9 billion in December 2013.

"This is now the highest ever recorded in this category for the province, and we have seen five straight months of growth in this category," said Chris Dekker, Associate Deputy Minister of Economy. "That coupled with some strong export numbers and retail sales really shows that we have some excellent momentum heading into 2015."

Saskatchewan's wholesale trade not only ranks third in month-to-month percentage change among the provinces, but first in year-over-year percentage growth.

Dekker adds these record breaking highs help balance out the economy and offset challenges being faced in other sectors, including oil.

"We've heard a lot of the recent downturn in oil prices and the effect that it will have on the economy and the province's bottom line, but this diversity helps to balance the economy," he said. "We're very positive heading into this year."
