Nominations for the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal are now open.

“Citizens have until October 18th to nominate outstanding individuals in their communities for the next round of the Saskatchewan Volunteer medals. They’ll be presented in 2015 in the spring and it will be indeed the twentieth anniversary of the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal.” explained Chief of Protocol with the Government of Saskatchewan, Jason Quilliam.

The long running awards have been in the province for good reason.

“Saskatchewan historically and continually has the highest rates of volunteerism in the country and it’s the government’s way to recognize that and really honour that commitment to their communities.” Stated Quilliam.

Citizens should be looking for someone who goes above and beyond with their time spent volunteering.

“We’ve given out I think 165 in the last nineteen years and basically it’s volunteers that reached out beyond his or her activities in their community and made daily life in their province better for everyone.” said Quilliam.

Betty McDougall from Swift Current was honoured last year for her volunteer work.
