Mayor Jerrod Schafer

It's been a year of change and growth for the City of Swift Current.

From proposed projects such as the integrated facility to one of the busiest years on record for construction of new businesses and homes.

Mayor Jerrod Schafer reflected back this week on 2011, and says he is expecting the upcoming year to see the continuation of a number of projects.

"You look back on 2011 we had lots of new construction including a couple of new hotels, some commercial developments, lots of commercial renovations, residential developments including affordable housing, and the water treatment plant and personal care homes," said Schafer. "We continue to see those things finish off into the new year.

Schafer says among the things he'd like to see in the upcoming provincial budget, some details around a new long term care facility . "I'm certainly hoping for a move towards a long term care facility," he says. "I think anybody that spends some time in the 3 facilities we have know that we certainly need some change there. I know it's a top priority for the provincial government, it's a top priority for our MLA, and I know it's a top priority for our residents."

And it was a year that saw the community come together as volunteers stepped up to help fight flood waters threatening homes in the community back in the spring, something the Mayor was especially proud of. "Our community really came together in spring regarding the flood and we saw some great work there."
