Residents at a nursing home in Ponteix decided to take it upon themselves to fundraise in order to raise money for entertainment at the home. Foyer St. Joseph residents were very involved in the walk-a-thon held over three days as activity worker at the home Lori Legault explains. "The event took place over three days. We posted on Facebook and we sent emails out to the families looking for pledges for laps that the residents would do around our outdoor safe garden." Legault says they do have an annual budget but in order to pay for entertainers to come it can be expensive. Previously, they had done bake sales, however with the pandemic this option is not possible. Legault says they came up with the idea for the walk-a-thon and the support was outstanding and surprising. This fundraiser allowed residents to be very hands on as Legault details. "The residents were so into this. They were just so excited and everybody participated. If you could'nt walk around the safe garden you could wheel your wheelchair, you could walk with your walker and those that could'nt walk were pushed around by staff in their wheelchairs. We even had some volunteers come out and help walk people and it was just a tremendous success." Legault adds that the resdients being involved was the driving force and idea behind the walk-a-thon. They did all the leg work getting pledges and making phone calls. The funds raised will be going towards entertainment for the residents such as visiting bands and bingo prizes. Legault says her initial goal was to raise between $500-$600 and although they are still tallying all the funds raised they have already reached over $4600. Due to the success of the event, Legault says she believes they will certainly run the event again.
