The town of Shaunavon is doing its part to promote school zone safety by installing three new flashing pedestrian crosswalk signs at the town schools.

Regional By-Law Enforcement officer for the town, Bonnie Lingenfelter provides details on how the project came to be.

"We had conducted the CAA School Safety Assessment a little while ago. It identified many risky behaviors and one of which was pedestrian safety. So from the numbers, we got from the school zone we knew we had to start promoting further safety."

Lingenfelter explains where they have been installed.

"So they are installed in front of Christ the King School, the Shaunavon high school, and at the Shaunavon public school we installed them on 3rd street east just west where we had developed a new crosswalk as well."

Each set of lighted crosswalks costs $7000 each but Lingenfelter says they received funding to help with the cost. She says they had help through the SGI Traffic Safety Fund which provided them with $13,258 and another donation from TC Energy's Build Strong Community Giving program which donated $7000.

Lingenfelter adds that the project was a group effort from the individuals that helped with the CAA assessment to all the schools taking part, local RCMP the grant money received, and public works installing everything.
