Fred Farnworth, Shaunavon's 2017 Citizen of the Year.

It's Official! The 2017 Shaunavon Citizen of the Year, awarded by the Shaunavon Chamber of Commerce, has been announced.

Congratulations to Fred Farnworth, whose impressive resume of volunteerism in Shaunavon makes him the ideal choice for this year's award.

Fred's credentials are impressive. He has volunteered for approximately 43 years, putting in an estimated 12,000 hours of community work. And he's not done yet!

Fred has been the voice of The Shaunavon Badgers, Shaunavon Minor Hockey, Shaunavon Senior Men's Baseball, Youth Ball, Men's and Ladies Fastball and High School Football including Shaunavon Shadows and Gull Lake Lions games over the years.

And it's not just sports, Farnworth also lends his talents for sports banquets, Darkhorse Theatre, Bingo calling and Bowling Awards Banquets, just to name a few.

He spoke to our newsroom about the honor saying, "It was certainly very unexpected, and very humbling, to receive the Award, and it's very nice to get it, but it wasn't certainly something I was expecting. You don't do it for the accolades, you do it to try and give something back to the community."

Fred has lived his entire life in Shaunavon and works for The Shaunavon Standard. His volunteering "career" started with his first media job  which was at CJSN Radio in the early 70's. Fred was the news and sports reporter and also did a Morning Show live from CJSN Studios in Shaunavon.

A Gala Banquet in Fred Farnworth's honor will be held at a later date.
