A pair of farms near Hodgeville were battered last night by a hasty tornado.

Environment Canada confirmed this morning that there was a touchdown and they're currently looking into the force of the tornado.

"From the pictures, quite a bit of damage to one of the farms," Terri Lang, a meteorologist from Environment and Climate Change Canada, said. "We won't know the strength of it until there is some investigation. They estimate the strength of tornados based on the damage. It does appear it was brief thankfully."

The tornado was the first reported across the prairies since June 15th earlier this year.

"It's been a very odd summer season," she said. "In June and July, we didn't get many thunderstorms... And then all of a sudden the pattern has changed and we're starting to get rainy, we're getting thunderstorms, we're getting severe weather so this is sort of like our June and July pattern but in late August... It is unusual to get severe weather this late in the season but we've had it before."

Lang mentioned the southwest region will continue to be hit with rain showers in the near future but whether the atmosphere is able to produce more severe storms is still up in the air.
