One of the largest Saskatchewan-based companies has received national recognition.

The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) was identified on the 2017 list of Best Workplaces in Canada by Great Place to Work Canada last Thursday.

"We're definitely really excited to be named on the 2017 great places to work in Canada list," Shauna Bear, Vice President of Human Resources for SIGA said. "This definitely means a great deal to SIGA and we're very proud of the accomplishment that we were named to the list ."

This was the first time the company has been named to the list that will be published in a special 12-page National Report by the Globe & Mail.

"It's really a number of different programs and services offered to our employees that ensure exceptional employee experience, so that they may give back to our customers in that regard as well," Bear said.

SIGA, which employees nearly 1,900 people, was ranked 49th out of 50 on the 'Large & Multinational' list. A requirement of the category, the largest of three, is the employment minimum of 1,000 employees.

"I definitely think it was the hardest to make the large category just because of the resources," she said. "If you look at some of those other companies (that SIGA was up against) they have thousands of employees across different countries and they have lots of resources too. Whereas SIGA is Saskatchewan-based, all of our properties are in Saskatchewan and we have a limited number of resources."

SIGA owns six casinos in Saskatchewan, one of which is Swift Current's Living Sky Casino, which currently employees approximately 197 people.

The business, which is 100 percent First Nation owned, also has casinos in North Battleford, Prince Albert, White Bear First Nation, Yorkton and Whitecap Dakota First Nation.
