Rural municipalities and smaller communities under 500 people are now able to join regional police services.

On Monday, the Government of Saskatchewan passed 'The Police (Regional Policing) Amendment Act'.

Originally, 'The Police Act' allowed for the establishment of regional police services, but rural municipalities were not able to take part in regional policing arrangements. If they did participate, it was in limited circumstance.

"I think it just gives people more opportunities or more options," said Christine Tell, minister for corrections and policing. "All it does is it gives more options."

Tell added that these changes came from consultations done back in 2016, which looked at the rural crime in Saskatchewan where communities wanted the option to be a part of regional policing.
