With the fall season quickly approaching the City of Swift Current is hoping to get another construction project done before the snow hits.

Monday night city council approved of a rehabilitation project for the South Railway Street bridge at a cost of $550,000 - $50,000 less than the 2017 capital budget allotted for.

"Now that we've gotten the award (sorted out), we will start that (construction) very quickly," General Manager of Infrastructure and Operations with the City of Swift Current Mitch Minken said. "We're very close to being in September now and this project needs to be completed before freeze up, so we will be getting it going immediately."

The project, which the city has been planning for five years, was awarded to PCL Construction Management Inc. - the only company to officially submit a bid to the city.

The now 40-year-old bridge will undergo upgrades involving replacing the asphalt surface, adding a waterproof membrane, replacing the expansion joints and completing concrete repairs on existing abutments, piers and decks.

"I would expect that we will take that bridge completely out of service, for the time it takes to get it done," he said. "It's much smaller bridge than the last one we did, so we're probably looking at a 6-8 week window for repairs to that one."

PCL Construction Management Inc. will be responsible for determining traffic accommodations and detours, as the construction will take the eastern portion of South Railway Street out of service until the project is complete.
