Pats edge Oil Kings in OT, Broncos host ICE tonight

Connor Bedard scored at 3:01 of overtime as the Regina Pats beat the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-3 in Thursday's lone WHL game at Rogers Place.

Bedard, widely expected to go first overall in this year's NHL Draft, has five goals and seven points in three games this season.

The Swift Current Broncos return to action tonight when they welcome the Winnipeg ICE. The Broncos are coming off a split of a season-opening home-and-home against the Calgary Hitmen, while the ICE are 2-0 after wins over Brandon and Prince Albert.

Tonight's game starts at 7:00pm from InnovationPlex and you can hear the action on the Eagle 94.1 FM with Living Sky Casino Broncos Hockey starting at 6:30pm. The Broncos then visit the Saskatoon Blades on Saturday.

Moose Jaw hosts Prince Albert and Medicine Hat visits Lethbridge in other WHL action tonight.

Lind scores in NHL pre-season action

Shaunavon's Kole Lind scored in the third period as the Seattle Kraken came back from down 2-1 after one to beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 in overtime in the NHL pre-season.

Lind, who was selected by the Kraken from the Canucks in the team's expansion draft in 2021, had two goals and eight points in 23 games last season.

Elsewhere, Nate Schmidt scored with 18 seconds left to lift the Winnipeg Jets over the Montreal Canadiens 4-3. Cole Caufield had a goal and an assist for the Habs in a losing cause.

Wildcats open regular season this weekend, Legionnaires in Wilcox

The Innovation Credit Union U18 AAA Wildcats will open the regular season at home this weekend against the Regina Rebels.

The Wildcats finished third in the SFU18AAAHL last season with a 17-9-4-0 record and were eliminated by the Rebels in the playoffs.

Saturday's game is at 7:45pm and Sunday's face-off is at 1:45pm, both at S3 Arenas (formerly Fairview Arenas).

Meanwhile, the Home Hardware Legionnaires travel to Wilcox to take on the Notre Dame Hounds on Saturday, seeking their first victory of the young SMAAAHL season.

Busy weekend for high school sports

The Swift Current Colts football team head to Weyburn on Saturday afternoon to take on the Eagles, while in 9-man football, the Shaunavon Shadows host Lumsden, the Gull Lake Lions welcome Indian Head, and Maple Creek travels to Notre Dame this afternoon.

In soccer, the Colts will travel to Moose Jaw on Saturday for games against Yorkton Regional and Sacred Heart.

Blue Jays clinch playoff spot on off day

The Toronto Blue Jays clinched a spot in the postseason on Thursday without even taking the field.

The Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 at Fenway to hand the Jays a wild card spot in the American League playoffs. Toronto holds a 1.5 game lead over Seattle and an two-game lead over Tampa Bay for the first wild card spot and home field advantage for the best-of-three wild card series.

The Blue Jays start a three-game set with the Red Sox tonight at Rogers Centre with ace Alek Manoah starting for Toronto.

Riders visit Bombers to start Friday CFL doubleheader

The Saskatchewan Roughriders look to snap a three-game losing skid when they face the Winnipeg Blue Bombers tonight for the third time this season.

The Riders dropped both the Labour Day Classic and Banjo Bowl to the Bombers and lost 26-24 to Edmonton at Mosaic Stadium before going into a bye week.

The Bombers can clinch a home playoff game with a win tonight. The Riders sit fourth in the West Division but are four points ahead of Hamilton for a crossover spot.

Kick-off from IG Field is at 6:00pm tonight.

In the late game tonight, the BC Lions host the struggling Ottawa RedBlacks at BC Place. Montreal visits Edmonton and Calgary hosts Toronto in CFL action tomorrow.

Tua stretchered off as Dolphins lose to Bengals

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered neck and head injuries after a hard hit in Thursday night's NFL game against the Cincinatti Bengals and had to be carried off the field on a stretcher.

Tagovailoa, who was listed as questionable for much of this week after a hard hit in a game on Sunday, was taken to hospital for further evaluation and was expected to be discharged and fly home with the team.

The Dolphins lost to the Bengals 27-15.

Canada falls to the US in FIBA World Cup semi

Canada's women's basketball team dropped an 83-43 decision to the powerhouse Americans in the semi-final of the FIBA World Cup in Sydney, Australia.

The Americans will face China for gold, while Canada takes on the host Australians for bronze later tonight.
