The Swift Current SPCA is in urgent need of support from the community to keep the doors open at the shelter.

"Without sugar-coating it, we're not in a great way," said SPCA Board Member Chris Martens. "We're hoping to raise funds because we need some income coming in."

Martens says they have started a campaign called "14 for 2014", where everyone is being encouraged to send a $14.00 donation to the shelter.

"That's really going to help us keep our doors open," he added. "Not to paint the black picture of death on it, but it's going to help us survive, and that's what we need right now."

The SPCA is sending out letters to the community to encourage donations.

Meanwhile, they're holding their "Fill the Nets" donation drive at the Swift Current Broncos game tonight. Fans coming out are being asked to bring donations of pet food, supplies and money for the shelter.
